Rennradmuseum Fröndenberg

Fröndenberg/Ruhr has been a stronghold of cycling for over 100 years. From 1890 to 1990, the company UNION-ZWEIRADTEILE was the largest employer in the Ruhr town. Union was the world market leader in chains and spokes for a long time, but hubs, pedals and later lighting systems were also part of the product range.

This connection led to the founding of RV 31 Fröndenberg in Fröndenberg in 1931, supported by UNION, which produced numerous successful racing cyclists. In addition, races in and through Fröndenberg were on the agenda every year, ranging from flat and mountainous circuit races to the mountain classifications of Rund um Dortmund, the Easter races through the district of Unna or the Deutschlandtour on the famous Eulenberg. Numerous expert spectators always lined the race route.

Building on the collection of road bikes donated by Fröndenberg resident Andreas Grünewald, the members of the museum association have set up a museum in the rooms of the former town library on the central market square to commemorate this historical factor, focusing on the history of road bikes from 1900 to the present day and on cycling in Fröndenberg and the surrounding area.

A visit is worthwhile for those interested in technology, cycling and local history, especially for cyclists on the busy Ruhr Valley cycle path, which winds its way past the museum just 100 meters away.

On August 14, 2022, the museum was opened to the public by the mayor of the town of Fröndenberg, Ms. Sabina Müller, together with the association’s chairman Bernd-Friedrich Kern, UCI member Toni Kirsch and cycling expert Hans Kuhn. Para-Olympic champion Hans Peter Durst and the former track world champions Lucas Liß and Ernst Claußmeyer and previously Erik Zabel had brought their world championship bikes to the opening, which can now be viewed in the museum. These and many other interesting exhibits now await visitors.
